Hayat, an ambitious MBA student at a prestigious university, was eager to make her mark. She had a keen interest in artificial intelligence (AI). When she learned about an upcoming AI project at her university, she saw a perfect opportunity to apply her skills and make a significant impact.
She managed to secure a meeting with Samir, the head of the AI division. Samir was looking for perspectives to push the boundaries of their current AI projects.
On a Tuesday afternoon. Hayat arrived to the meeting with a blend of excitement and nervousness. She had done her preparation, researched thoroughly the university’s current AI initiatives and identified areas where she could contribute. She began by introducing herself and expressing her enthusiasm for the AI field. Samir appreciated her passion but was keen to understand what unique value she could bring to the project.
"I understand Hayat said, that our university is currently working on a predictive analytics tool for the retail sector. I've identified a few areas where my skills could be particularly useful. First, I can help refine the business case by conducting market analysis and identifying key business segments. Second, I can assist in developing a go-to-market strategy that ensures the tool reaches the right audience and delivers maximum value. And finally, I can facilitate communication between the AUB and the business teams to ensure alignment and smooth execution."
Samir leaned back in his chair. "Those are important aspects, indeed. But what makes you confident that you can handle these responsibilities effectively?"
Hayat was prepared for this question. "During my MBA, I led a team project where we developed a business plan for a fintech startup. We had to work closely with software developers, understand the technical challenges, and translate them into business requirements. Additionally, I've taken specialized courses in AI and data analytics, so I have a solid grasp of the technical foundations."
As the conversation progressed, Hayat noticed Samir’s skepticism growing. Realizing she was losing ground, she decided to shift her approach. Instead of trying to prove her capabilities, she focused on understanding Samir's concerns.
"Samir," she said, "I sense some hesitation. Could you share more about the specific challenges you're facing with this project?"
This question changed the tone of the meeting. Samir began to open up about the complexities of integrating AI while maintaining strict data privacy standards. Hayat listened intently, asking clarifying questions to fully grasp the issues.
By the end of their discussion, Hayat proposed a collaborative approach. "How about we start with a pilot phase where I work closely with your team to tackle these challenges? This way, I can demonstrate my capabilities while learning the specifics of your project."
Samir smiled, appreciating her willingness to adapt and collaborate. "That sounds like a reasonable plan. Let's give it a try."
Through active listening and strategic negotiation, Hayat turned a potentially failed meeting into a promising opportunity. Her story highlights the importance of understanding the other party’s needs, asking the right questions, and finding a middle ground.
